AS-Interface Training opportunities

Certified Engineer courses

Currently, there are two organizations which are recognized by the UK Expert Alliance as having developed courses meeting an acceptable standard of content and candidate evaluation. Engineers successfully passing these courses achieve Certified Engineer status.

Successful 'Certified Engineers' are listed here so you can check to see if an individual engineer has achieved a satisfactory level of competence. This is critical if you are dealing with Safety Systems where a knowledge of International Safety Standards and specific experience with ASi Safety at Work products is important. If this is the area in which you need to operate you are urged not to work with companies or individuals who cannot demonstrate 'competence' in the selling, design, use and application of AS-Interface Safety at Work products.

The following two organizations offer formal training in AS-Interface:

Manchester Metropolitan University

Long-established courses on basic AS-i technology held roughly bi-monthly; AS-Interface Safety at Work currently being integrated. These courses are vendor-neutral and can be held on-site or at MMU. Please see below for more details.

Siemens A&D, Manchester

Courses on AS-i technology and AS-Interface Safety at Work are currently being held by Siemens. These courses are Siemens-specific (i.e. they are based on Siemens PLC products)

This 1.5 day course teaches the theory and practice of AS-i in a vendor-neutral way. Using a hands-on, practical approach you will learn how to use AS-i intelligent sensors, actuators and remote I/O in the most efficient and effective way, and see how to integrate AS-i into higher level fieldbuses. You will build, configure and exercise your own AS-interface system from scratch. The course also includes an overview of the AS-i ‘Safety at Work’ profile which allows AS-i networks to be used in safety-critical systems such as emergency stop and machine protection systems.

The course was developed with the aid of the UK AS-i Expert Alliance. High standards of competency are ensured by written and practical tests. Successful graduates receive a ‘Certified AS-i Engineer’ certificate.

Course outline
  • Lecture 1 – Overview of AS-i development technology and features
  • Practical – Build an AS-i network
  • Lecture 2 – AS-i in-depth
  • Practical – Configure and exercise your network
  • Lecture 3 – AS-i extensions (V2.1 and V3.0)
  • Lecture 4 – The AS-i Safety at Work profile
  • Demonstration – Setting up a AS-i safe system
  • Practical test and Multiple-choice theory test

The course is aimed at Engineers and Technicians who are involved in the planning and installation of fieldbus networks. No previous knowledge of AS-i is required. However, even experienced fieldbus engineers will gain valuable insight on how to get the best from the technology. A diverse range of AS-i products and equipment is used during the course.

The course costs £545 per person, £475 for AS-Interface Expert Alliance members. The fee covers:

Courses are held regularly at MMU. They can also be held at external sites if attendee numbers can be guaranteed.

List of Certified Engineers

Paul Hingley will be pleased to advice on the details of these courses, which are held at regular intervals and last up to five days. Not all parts have to be taken in the same week (however, please note that the Safety at Work part requires a detailed knowledge of relevant Safety Standards.

The course includes:

  • an overview of AS-Interface technology in general, including the latest V3 specification and how it enhances AS-i.
  • a detailed look as Siemens' AS-i products and how to deploy them.
  • a comprehensive introduction to the Machine Safety Standards relevant to industrial networking systems in automation (note: this is a key requisite before proceeding to the next part ... ).
  • the AS-i Safety at Work profile and how it is implemented using Siemens' products.

Test are taken at appropriate times during the course. Successful completion results in the applicant being awarded a Certificate by the Siemens 'Training for Automation and Drives' department. The successful applicant also qualifies to have his details listed here.
